Dale Blaney to pilot Ron Hammons' #6 at Short Track Nationals

Little Rock, Arkansas – Setting their sights on the $15,000 top prize, driver, Dale Blaney and car owner, Ron Hammons have teamed up to enter what is turning out to be the most impressive field in the history of the Short Track Nationals. Blaney will be driving Hammons’ #6, 360 sprint car, at the event being held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Blaney is making his first appearance at the high-banked, quarter mile, clay oval, in the 19th running of this annual event. But you won’t find any “rookie” nerves coming from the seasoned Hartford, OH, racer, “I'm definitely looking forward to racing and seeing what we can bring home."

Blaney will be racing with some of the best drivers in the sport today. “Every good 360 driver in the country will be there.” stated Blaney. As of last Friday, 76 entries had been received, with over 100 expected by the deadline for the Hoosier Tire sponsored event. The drivers in the current field hail from 19 states and combined have over 250, "A" Feature wins this season.

That impressive field and the added draw of a $15,000, winner’s purse, have not been lost on Blaney, “It's a prestigious race and it pays a lot of money, Ron and I are looking forward to a great showing at the Short Track Nationals.

For Hammons, a veteran of the I-30 Speedway race for the past few years, Dale Blaney first impressed him when he asked Blaney to pilot the #6 at Eldora’s Old Spice Summer Sizzler this season. “Dale got in the car and brought it home 2nd after a 17th place start. After that, we also raced together at Limaland (2nd) for the NRA Championship Night and went to the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway in, Ontario, Canada (5th).”

With good showings in their prior starts together, the Lima, OH, car owner decided they should try their luck at the STN race. “Bringing a good driver to an event like this is the key to being competitive. Hopefully, Dale and I will be bringing home the win at the end of this weekend in Little Rock.”

The event runs October 26-28, 2006, with preliminary action beginning on Thursday and Friday, followed by the $15,000 finale on Saturday night.

STN on the Net: Those unable to attend the biggest Sprint Car event of the year can listen to all the action live at www.americandirtnetwork.com.

Short Track Nationals Event Format:

The Short Track Nationals is all about racing. The racers earn everything they get and the fans are the ultimate winners as they watch three nights of unrivaled on-track action unfold.

A version of the Sprint Bandits popular format of heats and qualifying races will be in place for all three nights of competition, with all drivers eligible to compete each night (unless getting locked in through Thursday night's feature). Drivers will battle through a full set of Heat Races, Last Chance Races and Qualifying Races to set the feature lineups each night, with the top three finishers from the Thursday and Friday preliminary main events locked into Saturday's $15,000-to-win, $1,900-to-start main event.

The balance of The Short Track Nationals championship feature will be filled through another full card of Heats, Last Chance Races and Qualifiers on Saturday night, with the night's top twelve points earners filling spots seven through 18 in the feature starting grid. Positions 19 and 20 will be awarded to the two drivers who have accumulated the most points over the three nights but have not landed in the first 18 spots. A 21st position could be awarded to Justin Sturch, who earned a provisional starting position by claiming the I-30 Speedway track championship.

Drivers must compete in either Thursday’s prelim or Friday’s prelim to be eligible for passing points on Saturday. Drivers that show up for Saturday only will start tailback in their Heat Race and receive no passing points all night.

The Dash, consisting of the top three feature finishers from both Thursday and Friday night, will be aligned by a pill draw conducted in “Cheater’s Day” fashion. The finishing order of Saturday’s “Pack’s Dash for Cash” will then determine the starting lineup for the front three rows of the $15,000-to-win finale.

Dale Blaney captures 3rd in Kenny Weld Memorial

Abbottstown, PA. – October 23, 2006 – After winning the 3rd heat in a never look back style and starting the 40 lap feature in 8th position, Dale Blaney used both the top and bottom of the track as he threaded his way through the field to bring the #2 George Fisher Racing, 410 sprint car, to a solid 3rd place finish in the Kenny Weld Memorial race at Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA.

Dale took the track for the 3rd qualifying heat, starting outside of the second row in 4th position. Taking the lead on the second lap coming off of turn 2, Dale never looked back, winning by a full straightaway, with a time of 2:25.41.

With 36 of 41 sprints within a second of each other on the time trial clock and finishing 11th in the time trials (13.693), Dale lined up 8th for the 40 lap feature. With several cautions coming in the first few laps, the GFR #2 fell back to 10th at the 6 lap mark. Dale, with the final restart on lap 9, started working his way to the front, running on the bottom and moving up to the top to pass lapped cars.

Shortly after the half way mark, Dale moved to the top and worked on catching the leaders. Dale bided his time and picked his way through the field as the flag stayed green for the remainder of the race.

His strategy paid off on lap 33 as he passed Greg Hodnett for 3rd and set his sights on pole sitter Michael Carber running in the 2nd position to the eventual race winner, Fred Rahmer. As Dale closed in on the 2nd place car, Hodnett proved to be a pesky foe for the GFR driver.

With 5 laps to go, as they fought for the 3rd position, drivers Alan Krimes and Lance Dewease joined the battle. Dale got past Carber on lap 38 for the 2nd position with Hodnett right behind, but Dewease snuck through, passing both Dale and Hodnett one lap later as they were closing on the leader.

Dale held off Hodnett for a third place finish behind Rahmer (1st) and Dewease (2nd).

The last time Dale took the track at Lincoln Speedway was last year at an All-Star Circuit of Champions race, driving Jack Elden's #22. He started on the pole and finished 8th.

Dale on the Kenny Weld Memorial race:
"Our car was really good in the feature tonight. The GFR #2 was probably on harder tires than the other guys. When they dropped the green, I knew we were okay, the other guys would take off better on the start, but, I knew that our car would be better toward the end of the race. I wasn't really worried about the first 10 or 15 laps. Our car showed it was really good the last 25 laps or so."

"Tonight's race was very encouraging for our team. This was only the second time for George and me to race at Lincoln together. We were looking forward to coming out here and racing against a great field of cars, at one of their track’s biggest races. Qualifying fairly well (11th) made us really happy. Starting 8th and running third against this group, was really encouraging. It's such a good field of cars."

Next up for Dale:
This Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 26-28, 2006, Dale will be racing a 360 Sprint at the Short Track Nationals, I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas. He will be driving Ron Hammons' #6. Hammons, of Lima, OH, has been to this race the past few years with driver Chad Kemenah at the wheel.

"This will be my first time at that track. Every good 360 driver in the country will be there. It's a prestigious race and pays a lot of money. I'm definitely looking forward to racing and seeing what we can bring home."

Short Track Nationals: Four Days and Counting

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- By this time next week, some lucky driver will be basking in the glory and have an extra $15,000 in his pocket after a triumph in the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway.

As of Friday, 76 entries had flooded the track office for the prestigious event that offers up a healthy $1,900 just to start Saturday night's championship feature event. Saturday's finale will follow two full nights of preliminary action on Thursday and Friday.

Among the latest to submit official entries are defending race winner Tim Montgomery of Fredericktown, MO, along with other past STN kings Tim Crawley and Terry Gray. Crawley scored his STN triumph in 1998, with Gray victorious in 1994.

Other past winners expected to vie for another STN crown include four-time winner Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, and Memphis-area racers Jason Sides and Mike Ward.

Montgomery, taking the helm of the No. 11 entry normally driven by Cape Girardeau, MO, racer Tyler Thompson, will try to match the feat pulled off by Gary Wright in 2004: back-to-back STN wins. Wright is the only driver to post back-to-back STN wins since the event became a 360-ci showcase in 1993. In fact, Wright is the only driver to post more than one victory since 1993, picking off wins in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2004

While Montgomery tries for a second win in a row, Crawley will try to make his 14th overall win of 2006 his most lucrative, as will Gray.

Crawley and Gray have been among the most successful in STN history, taking a back seat to only Wright. Along with his four wins, Wright has a total of twelve top-ten STN finishes since 1993. Gray has posted seven top-ten runs, with Crawley finishing among the top ten a half dozen times.

The only other drivers to post six or more top-ten STN finishes include 1996 winner Pete Butler (who is questionable for this year's edition with health issues) with seven top-tens and 2000 winner Mike Ward, 1997 winner Wayne Johnson and Garry Lee Maier, each with six top-ten showings.

While Montgomery, Crawley and Gray will try to add another STN trophy to the shelf, a stout bunch of contenders will make a run to become the 13th different winner in STN history.

Among those bidding for a first STN win will be California's Tim Kaeding and Brad Sweet, Louisiana's Jason Johnson, Missouri's Brian Brown and Jesse Hockett, Ohio's Dale Blaney, Oklahoma's Nick Smith and Sean McClelland, Florida's Danny Martin, Jr., New York's Justin Barger, Texas' Kevin Ramey and Sam Hafertepe, Jr., South Dakota's Chuck Swenson and a host of other top contenders from throughout the nation.

Advance discount tickets for the 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires, which will attract a field of approximately 100 entries, will be on sale through Wednesday. After that, tickets may be purchased at the gate on race day. Each night of racing action fires off at 7:30 p.m.

Kaeding & Blaney Add Names to Short Track Nationals Entry List
by Lonnie Wheatley (10.23.06)

(Copied from racefan.com)

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The names "Kaeding" and "Blaney" rarely have the term "rookie" tagged with them, but that will be the case at the end of this month as California's Tim Kaeding and Ohio's Dale Blaney are among the latest entries for the $15,000-to-win 19th Annual Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires, to be contested at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway on October 26-28.

It will mark the first time that either of the two Sprint Car aces have taken a shot at the prestigious Short Track Nationals title.

Kaeding will join forces with two-time STN winning car owner Donnie Cooper, while Blaney will pilot an entry fielded by fellow Buckeye-state resident Ron Hammons.

Missouri's Cooper, an STN winner with Paul McMahan in 2002 and Tim Montgomery last year, will shoot for an unprecedented third Short Track Nationals crown with Kaeding, the most frequent National Sprint Tour victory lane visitor in 2006 with 14 triumphs.

Cooper is tied with Olive Branch, MS, car owner Bobby Sparks, who enjoyed STN laurels in 1997 and 1998 with Wayne Johnson and Tim Crawley, respectively. Sparks is expected to be back as well to take a shot at a third STN title, with Bixby, Oklahoma's Darren Stewart at the helm.

With a pair of All Star wins among his four '06 triumphs while running a selected slate of events, Blaney climbed to fourth on the all-time All Star win list with 54 career feature wins. Blaney won the All Stars title in both 1995 and 1996.

Kaeding and Blaney headline the latest group of official STN entries, which now numbers more than 30, already ahead of last year's pace which eventually netted 91 competitors for the 18th running of the Short Track Nationals.

Among the other top contenders to officially submit an STN entry is newly crowned ASCS Sooner Region champion Sam Hafertepe, Jr., of Sunnyvale, TX. Hafertepe captured a top-ten STN finish in 2004 at the age of 18.

Also among the latest entries is ASCS Sooner Region points runner-up Sean McClelland of Collinsville, OK. McClelland, the 2005 ASCS Sooner Region champion, is also ranked sixth in ASCS National points.

Other recent entries include ASCS Northern Plains Region points runner-up Eric Lutz of Sioux Falls, SD, Knoxville Raceway 360-ci points runner up Jeff Mitrisin of Oskaloosa, IA, two-time '06 ASCS Sprints on Dirt feature winner Ryan Grubaugh of St. Johns, MI, and 2006 Cowtown Speedway track champion Jeff Day of Greenville, TX.

Other drivers with past STN championship feature starts among the latest entries include Missouri's Joey Montgomery (2004), Mississippi's Raymond Stull (1999) and Texas' Skip Wilson (1993 and 1994).

Also included among the latest entries are Missouri's Steve Short, Tennessee's Brian Bell, South Dakota's Mitch Runge and Mississippi's Buster Dickerson.

The latest entries join a stellar group of early entries that included hotshoes Brian Brown, Jason Johnson, Jesse Hockett, Nick Smith, Garry Lee Maier and Danny Martin, Jr., among others.

Format: A version of the Sprint Bandits popular format of heats and qualifying races will be in place for all three nights of competition. Each night, Heat Races will be aligned according to the pre-race draw, with the passing points system in effect.

Each night, the top 40 in passing points from Heat Race competition will transfer directly into four, fully inverted Qualifying Races. The balance of the field will make up four Last Chance races, lined straight-up according to Heat Race passing points, with the top four finishers of each Last Chance race transferring to the tail of the respective Qualifying Races. Passing points only will be awarded in Last Chance races, with no finishing position points awarded.

With passing points in effect for the Qualifying Races as well, the Thursday and Friday preliminary features will be comprised of the top twenty in combined points from Heats, Qualifiers and Last Chance Races, with the top three feature finishers locked into Saturday’s main event.

With six cars locked into Saturday’s $15,000-to-win, $1,900-to-start main event, the top twelve drivers in combined passing points from Saturday’s Heats, Qualifiers and Last Chance Races will fill positions seven through eighteen. The final two slots of the STN finale will be awarded to the two remaining drivers that have accumulated the most points through Heat, Qualifying, Last Chance and Feature racing action over the three nights of racing.

Drivers must compete in either Thursday’s prelim or Friday’s prelim to be eligible for passing points on Saturday. Drivers that show up for Saturday only will start tailback in their Heat Race and receive no passing points all night.

The Dash will be aligned by a pill draw conducted in “Cheater’s Day” fashion. Thursday’s winning driver will draw the first pill then give that pill to the driver of his choice. Friday’s winner will draw the second pill and give that pill to one of the remaining drivers, and so on until the lineup is determined.

The finishing order of Saturday’s “Pack’s Dash for Cash” will then determine the starting lineup for the front three rows of the $15,000-to-win finale.

RAHMER ENDS LINCOLN SEASON WITH 7TH WELD MEMORIAL WIN IN HAMILTON

ABBOTTSTOWN, PA, 10/21/06 - The last time Fred Rahmer and Al Hamilton stood in victory lane together was the Kenny Weld Memorial in 2001. On Saturday night at Lincoln, they celebrated together again, at least for one night.

One race after crawling into the Hamilton No.77 in a much talked-about ride switch with Greg Hodnett, Rahmer led the first lap from his front row starting spot, followed polesitter Michael Carber for seven laps, and then reclaimed the lead for good on the final (ninth-lap) restart to score his 148th career win in the Pigeon Hills.

"At the beginning there, I wanted to get the lead," explained Rahmer in victory lane, "But he got it, and I just sort of saved the tires until we came to lapped traffic. Mike (Carber) is an excellent racer and a great driver."

"Any race named after Kenny Weld is a great race," added Rahmer, "He didn’t just call up on the phone and order parts. He created parts and a whole new way of racing. I am absolutely thrilled to win a race in his honor."

Rahmer’s final margin of victory was 1.57 seconds, but it was the ongoing race for second that had the large crowd’s attention over the final 32 non-stop laps.

Carber ran second after Rahmer’s race-winning pass until 11th-starting Greg Hodnett pulled the slider to move into the runner-up spot in turns three and four of lap 15. Carber didn’t give up and dogged Hodnett over the next 17 laps before invader Dale Blaney, who started eighth, slid past for second on lap 33.

A lap later, Blaney closed on Hodnett as Alan Krimes and 20th-starting Lance Dewease joined the fray.

Over the final five laps, all four drivers battled for second. Blaney got by Hodnett for second on lap 37, and a lap later, Dewease charged past both Hodnett and Blaney to advance from fourth to second. All four cars actually closed on Rahmer over the final five laps.

Dewease received the D&D Septic hard charger award for his runner-up finish, with Blaney crossing third, Hodnett fourth in the Jim and Sandy Kline No.22, and Krimes fifth. Completing the top ten were Chad Layton, 2006 track champ Doug Esh, Carber, Brian Montieth, and Todd Shaffer.

Counting lap money, the winner’s share for the Weld Memorial was $7,680.00. The win, Rahmer’s fifth of the year at Lincoln and 12th overall in 2006, moved the Salfordville driver to within two wins of Steve Smith on the all-time career win list at Lincoln.

The win also kept Rahmer in the lead with one race remaining in the Speed Dawg Central Pennsylvania Sprint Car Point Series. With Hagerstown’s "Octoberfest" remaining, Rahmer’s points lead over Dewease is 2,156 to 2,125.

"I want to thank Al, all the guys, and all my sponsors...Miller Brothers, Material Handling Systems, Jeff Durr...Jim and Sandy Kline for the ride they gave me all year," said Rahmer, "I just figured I had to do something different. Greg’s really driving hard, and they’re a great team. It should be interesting next year."

Though he eluded to 2007, he would not comment on his plans.

Sprint car heats were won by Dewease, Josh Wells, Blaney and Keith Kauffman. Hodnett won the B-Main. Setting fast time in time trials over the 41-car field was Krimes, with a one-lap time of 13.378-seconds (100.912 MPH).

Gettysburg’s Mike Walls drove into the lead on the opening lap of the 20-lap thundercar finale and held-off a determined Nat Tuckey to pick up his 3rd win of 2006. A series of first lap crashes helped Walls advance from his originally scheduled ninth starting spot to start third and took full advantage of the opportunity by gettign by frontrow starters Choya Young and Rick Weaver on the opening lap to take the lead.

From there 11th-starting Nat Tuckey drove quickly to the front as well, along with eighth-starting Craig Wagaman to move into second and third place respectively on the fifth lap. But Walls was up to the task in what could be his last thundercar race and drove away over the final laps to take the checkered .56-seconds ahead for his 21st career win. Afterwards Walls announced he was hoping to be racing late models in 2007.

Duane Watson, who entered the evening second in the points by 105 points to Neil Smith in the 2006 finale drove hard to finish fourth.

But the evening belonged to Hanover’s Neil Smith as he came on late to finish fifth and lock up his first-ever thundercar track title.

Completing the top-10 were Al Cramer, Rick Weaver, Sam Gallagher, Robert Bopst and David Prunkl. Only 10 cars remained at the conclusion of the 20-lap finale.

Heats for the 37 thundercars were won by Smoke Christine, Tuckey, Walls and Greg Emlet Jr.. Twin consolations were won by Bob Bare and Gino Comi.

Lincoln Speedway will host it’s annual Racers Flea Market on Saturday, November 11th from 7 AM to 2 PM.

Then on Saturday night, November 18th, Lincoln will hold its Annual Awards Banquet at the Holiday Inn Holidome in York, PA.
